About Accent Music Academy
Founded in 2004 by Artistic Director David Cooke, Accent Music Academy offers vocal and instrumental instruction, as well as lessons in music theory and composition. Additionally, Accent Music Academy serves as a center for the study and performance of musical theater, producing three full-length shows a year, and offering classes and workshops in acting and theater-related subjects. Accent Music Academy is not structured on the “music store” model, but rather functions as a true school for musical instruction. While we are able to offer discount rates on materials that our students need, we remain — first and foremost — an educational facility. Our instructors all have formal training, are professionally active in their fields, and have several years of teaching experience. From beginner to advanced, classical to pop, the instructors at Accent Music Academy will guide you along your musical path in a welcoming and supportive setting.
The Extra Step
Whether it’s tracking down a musical score for a theory student, recording a backing track to help a voice student practice, or writing letters of recommendation as students apply for advanced study or extracurricular programs, the instructors and staff at Accent Music Academy always take the extra step to help students in their musical pursuits. We are there for our students, not just during their lessons, but throughout their entire musical journey.
Our Students
At Accent Music Academy, we take great pride in our students and their achievements. In addition to performing in their school ensembles (orchestra, chorus, musical theatre productions, etc.), our students have also performed with Pittsburgh CLO, Pittsburgh Youth Concert Orchestra, and Pittsburgh Youth Chorus, and several students have been selected for solo performances of the national anthem at various public events. Several Accent Music Academy students have been accepted into our region’s performing arts high schools, and are pursuing careers in the performing arts.
Artistic Director
David Cooke
David Cooke founded Accent Music for the purpose of educating area youth and giving them performance opportunities outside of school. An experienced performer, David has performed extensively throughout the area. He has been featured in main stage productions with Pittsburgh Opera and Opera Theater of Pittsburgh in addition to performing in outreach programs for children. Past roles have included Little Bat in Susannah, Belfiore in La Finta Giardiniera, Edgar in Wuthering Heights and Lechmere in Owen Wingrave. Having held soloist positions in several area churches, he has performed a varied repertoire of sacred and secular music. Mr. Cooke earned his undergraduate degree in vocal performance from Duquesne University, holds Master’s in Arts Administration from Carnegie Mellon University, and has completed the equivalent of a Master’s in Vocal Performance. With over twenty years of experience as a singer and educator, he has developed a unique approach to teaching which has allowed him to apply classical vocal technique while instructing students in many different styles of singing. David has served as music director for hundreds of area youth in a multitude of fully staged productions, recitals and concert presentations.
